Perhaps one of the most addictive epic fantasy MMORPG/card-battle hybrid game, Lies of Astaroth’s new 1.3 version has been released and is available to iOS users globally. As it can be expected from a role-playing game, the Astaroth universe is filled with all sorts of magical creatures, including the dragons that you will have to defeat one by one while exploring a captivating world full of everything, from magical forests to underground cities.
A relatively new company, iFree Studio has managed to become a world renowned and leading game mobile developer in only three years. The Hong Kong Based company is highly appreciated worldwide for its amazing recreational mobile apps as well as global scale games such as Lies of Astaroth.
The interface is absolutely amazing, period. On the other hand, the menu has an inconvenient structuring system and it will take you some time until you get used to it.
Lies of Astaroth is essentially a battle card game with the main emphasis placed on collecting cards during your journey. Each of the cards you collect features basic stats, such as attack strength, level, health and a digit indicating the number of turns that must pass in order to use the card again. In addition, depending on the card you find, you will have access to special skills that can become available from the start of the game or that can be improved as you level up.
As you progress, you will have the opportunity to create a custom deck out of all the cards you find. Nonetheless, you will not be able to use them all unless your level is high enough to cover their usage cost.
The battle system is similar to the one in Magic the Gathering, meaning that once the combat begins all the cards are lined up and take turns trading attacks. Once a card takes more damage than its health, it will be tossed into the graveyard for the rest of the fight. The battle continues until one of the players runs completely out of cards.
A quick look at its main features
- Embark on a trip in the rich and engrossing storyline of Lies of Astaroth
- The game features over 100 amazingly drawn characters and quite enchanting battle effects
- In the updated version you will purchase one of the four Class Card packs – Hell, Wilderness, Kingdom and Forest – for 150 crystals
- The developers have included two additional maps, namely Ruined Charred Plains and Wilderness Volcano
- Players reaching level 45 will unlock two new functions, Card Skill Shuffle and Card Evolve
- In the 1.3 version, players are rewarded for completing miscellaneous milestones with a reward they can access from the Campaign Notice board
As many players suggests, there are three features that you will find extremely gratifying throughout the game. First off, the combat system is fair and appropriate, as it places an emphasis on the importance of upgrading your units. Secondly, you have a vast universe to explore and plenty of things to see in Astaroth. Last, but not least important, this is among the few game cards that values the special skills of individual cards more than numeric values.
Another nice touch is that unlike other battle card games, Lies of Astaroth does not rely on Automatic Battles. While you can of course activate this option, you can also take over the combat and defeat your opponents with your own, personalized strategy.
Even though Lies of Astaroth is quite a fascinating game with an appealing storyline, progressing and leveling are not as fun as a player would expect. To be more precise, in order to gain new skills and abilities you will have to slowly burn your way through several levels. Moreover, unlike classic MMORPGs, this game also implies a lot of work in order to unlock the daily dungeon challenges.
In a nutshell
In all fairness, what you can accomplish in the enchanting universe of Astaroth is limited only by your determination. True enough, the game is easy to learn, but difficult to master. Still, Lies of Astaroth is one MMORPG for iOS that promises an extraordinary adventure you surely do not want to miss out on!
